In the modern world that we are currently living in, there are a range of several medical diagnosis and subsequent health implications that are often associated with temporary or adverse impact on the student's academic performance. Some of the common diagnosis that could lead to health impairment includes cancer, arthritis, asthma, AIDS and heart diseases. Health impairment rarely causes a disruption of the student's learning process unless the condition in question is neurological in nature. As a result, such health impairments could lead to diverse academic challenges such as prolonged absentia from classes as well as interference with the physical expertise needed to complete writing, computer or laboratory assignments. Hence in light of the above circumstances there is need for special considerations to be accorded to students marred with health impairments.
On of the many considerations that might be implemented is that curricula developers should in addition to the general curriculum incorporate a special kind of curriculum with special interests in life skills, communication and task performance. The accommodations should include the installation of assistive technology devices, mobility devices or even communication equipments. Computer based instructors, distance learning plus other feasible options that minimize travel and classroom based instruction could offer appropriate alternatives for students with illness that make class attendance difficult.
Furthermore, the creation of extra time for students to complete their homework, offering supplementary learning activities and arranging for after class tutoring sessions could be also a better idea. Teachers and instructors should be quite precautious when handling students with health impairments less they arouse health related reactions. On the other hand teachers should consider implementing strategies to achieve social success of their impaired students. They should play the role by helping the student focus on their positive activities. Student participation in clubs and organizations should be encouraged as this go along way to inculcate a feeling of self acceptance and determination.
Health impairments, being part of our human nature are here to stay. We should therefore strive and learn to appreciate those who have been impaired in one way or another and help them in turning their dreams into reality. That will surely go along way to prove our quest for humanity.
